Tallahassee is located in the north-central portion of Florida's Panhandle, where it serves as Florida's state capital. Boasting a population of 171,922 (as of 2008), Tallahassee is eighth most populous city in Florida and the 133rd-largest city in the United States. In 1977 a 23-story high-rise Capitol building was completed, which is now the third-tallest capitol in the U.S. (behind the capitols in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Lincoln, Nebraska).
